Waxing

All Things Waxing

In this section I have tried to detail the most relevant information for you to read at your leisure, before booking your wax appointment.

I understand it can be a bit nerve-wracking if you’ve never had it done before, or even if you have, and previously had a bad experience, or you are changing therapists for whatever reason. As a new client, you’ll always be made welcome from the start.

You’ll receive a detailed consultation form, sent to your inbox at home ahead of time, as soon as you book, so you can prefill your info beforehand giving me more time to make you feel at ease during your appointment.

Waxing Niceties – what to do before your wax!
  • Please exfoliate – a couple days before your appointment, this lifts the hair away from the skin and makes it easier and simpler to wax, also smooth skin gives better results and less in-growns further down the line!
  • Please shower on the day of your appointment.
  • Please DO NOT moisturise, body oil or exfoliate, on the day of your appointment, as it affects the waxes ability to adhere to the hair.
  • If you are having a chest wax or back wax please bring a fresh cotton t-shirt with you to your appointment to wear home, as part of your aftercare.
  • Please DO NOT trim! It’s preferable that I do that for you – so you don’t trim too short and you get the best possible results from your treatment. If you trim (no matter how hairy you think you are!!) You risk me not being able to perform the treatment!
  • Do not shave or use hair removal creams in between appointments! Step away from the razor!
  • Please do not turn up sweaty from the gym!
  • If you work outdoors, make sure you change into fresh clothes before you arrive.
What to expect at your wax appointment

Upon Booking your appointment, you’ll be send a digital online consultation form, please, be as thorough as possible filling this in, as it’s important for the safety of your wax! At your wax appt – we’ll go through your consultation at the start to check nothings changed, or needs to be updated.

If you’re having an intimate wax, this is a no frills, no fuss treatment, you’ll need to be naked from the waist down. I do not use disposable underwear or bath towels to cover your modesty (you’d only end up with a load of towel fluff on you anyway). It’s both quicker and easier for me and more importantly you! If I can’t see it – I can’t wax it! Some areas of skin will need to be stretched while the wax is removed.

If you’re having an intimate wax & have booked an additional area such as legs or face, I will always do the intimate area first so that you can feel free to pop your underwear back on after this has been completed.

Hot & Strip Waxes

I question I get a lot, is which type of wax do you use? The answer is both, and they both, are superstars in their own right, if used correctly! And that’s the key, isn’t it, using the right tool for the right job!

All of my intimate, facial and underarm waxing treatments are carried out using peelable hot wax…
Don’t be confused by the name though… Hot wax is actually kept at a lower temperature than strip wax. It’s a more gentle and effective way of hair removal, and suitable for what we call -Terminal Hair.

I use strip wax on the larger areas where the hair is softer – Vellus Hair, so, Chest, back, legs and forearms etc. Although I have been known to use a mixture of hot and strip in these areas, if I think it will be a more comfortable treatment for you.

Here at Wax & Wellbeing we also have a strict Hygiene Policy, which includes “No, Double Dipping” ever!

Getting the best outta your wax!
    • Exfoliate the area 3-4 times per week and moisturise daily (gently does it, with exfoliation! Don’t scrub the skin red raw) This is the most important bit of your aftercare routine! I can’t stress it enough…
    • Dry body brush lightly to increase circulation of blood flow and increase skin cell renewal, this is great for people with poor circulation, Raynards, or who feel the cold
    • Apply an ingrown hair serum if you are prone – better to prevent than cure!
    • Book your next appointment, as regular waxing thins the hair, slows the growth, and feels softer and finer the more you do it!
Postcare Advice - The secret to a great wax… Is great aftercare!

A reaction may be seen on the skin for several hours following treatment but this is quite normal. This will vary from a mild redness or a plucked chicken look to a much stronger skin reaction and some people have red dots on the waxed area for several hours. If aftercare advice is followed the skin will return to normal within 24 hours. If the reaction is still present after this time or worsens seek medical advice from your GP.

For the ladies -Do ensure that you do not wear skinny jeans or tight clothing to your appointments, comfortable loose clothing, that lets the skin breathe post wax is preferable & for Intimate no lacy undies, clean cotton briefs are ideal.

For the Gentlemen – Please bring a clean cotton t-shirt with you to change into for body waxing. Change your bed sheets at home, so that your pores are not open to mites and sweat.

For all; 24/48 hrs after the treatment

  • No saunas, hot tubs, steam treatments or swimming pools. Your skin will definitely become irritated & you will be at risk of infection! You don’t know how clean the water is so its not worth the risk.
  • No hot baths or showers (warm water only)
  • No tanning! sunbathing /sunbeds – your skin will be more sensitive and can burn easier!
  • No tanning products- which can get into your pores and cause irritation
  • No sports, gym or exercise (anything that creates friction, and sweat)
  • No sexual activity – for at least 24hrs,That’s right! Sex burn on a fresh wax hurts!
  • Do not touch or scratch the area (this can cause infection)
  • Do not apply perfume, deodorant, body sprays, powders or lotions to the area, unless they are post wax salon products or Ph Neutral.
  • Do not apply heavy make-up. If makeup must be worn use a mineral makeup to avoid irritation
  • No microdermabrasion, derma rollering, derma pen, chemical peels, fillers or botox in the areas waxed for at least 4 days after.
Contra-Indications!

I will NOT wax anyone with any of the following;

  • Haemophiliac
  • Skin Cancer
  • Any contagious skin diseases such as; Ringworm, Shingles, Impetigo, Genital Warts (any other not mentioned)
  • Scar Tissue- under 3 months will not be considered in the areas to be waxed
  • Anyone with sunburn – this includes tanning beds!
  • Anyone using Ro-accutane (a treatment for acne) or steroid cream, or if you have used it in the last 6 months! This thins the skin!
  • Anyone using anti-ageing products with Retin -A or Tretnoin ingredients

I will wax with the following conditions met;

  • Varicose veins or poor circulation (GP note may be required, upon consult)
  • Diabetes – Managed long term is fine (if not, GP note may be required)
  • Epilepsy – (as long as medication is well controlled and does not cause bruising easily)
  • Scar Tissue between 3- 6 months (GP or midwife note maybe required)
  • Anyone that has had Botox or fillers must wait a week at least (7 days) before waxing the area.
  • Under 16’s – with parental consent & a parent present, at all times. (The minor must want to be waxed, no pushy parents please, & I will not consider anyone under 11 years old, body waxing only)

Waxing FAQ’s

About 5mm! Or about the size of a long grain of basmati rice! A minimum of 3 weeks from last shave but 4 is better! “You’ve got to let it show in order for it to go!” 😊 A minimum of 4wks is required between waxes. Please do not trim before your appointment, best leave that to us. The hairier the better! If you trim it too short I’d hate to tell you I can’t wax you. See our Blog “Waxing 101” on pre care advice for more info.

If you are new to waxing the answer is yes. Hair follows a growth cycle, randomly shaving (when you have time or when it’s date night) disrupts that growth cycle.  Therefore, it is unavoidable in the beginning, until your growth cycle has had time to sync. Rome wasn’t built in a day –it takes 3-4 waxes to see the benefits of regular waxing, & I promise you – it’s worth it! Don’t be tempted to shave in between- step away from the razor!

See our Blog “Waxing 101” pre-care for more info

It’s usually not as bad as your imagination thinks it will be!
In my experience, waxing is most uncomfortable when it’s a new sensation and you don’t know what to expect! Every person’s pain tolerance is unique to them. However any discomfort is fleeting, & will lessen further with each visit, as the hair thins and less hair is removed from the area. Almost all waxing newbies say that it wasn’t nearly as bad as they thought.. or built it up to be.  I can assure clients no-one walks out of the room in pain.

I hope not, but probably for the first minute or two. It’s scary not knowing what to expect – I get that – I promise! So I’ll be doing my best to make you comfortable, settle your nerves, & make you feel at ease. I wax clients of all shapes and sizes. All I’m concentrating on during the treatment is your hair and skin. So I can make sure you have the best, quickest and most thorough wax you’ve ever had, so that you’ll want to return to me again and again. If your nervous, check out some of my reviews at the bottom of my webpage to hear from my clients first hand- they can’t all be wrong!

I recommend every 4 weeks initially – for the first 3-4 waxes, after that you may feel you can leave longer gaps in between.

Here at WW, in my converted studio. I do have a restroom available for clients to use if you need to use the facilities. *It is located within the treatment room itself (don’t worry – it is enclosed, it’s really nicely done out, clients have commented how lovely it is). However, I don’t have a waiting room (your car is your waiting room, if you’re a little early). So provided you are on time for your treatment, there’s no problem with popping to the loo before we start, or after we’re done. Tampons, pads, & fancy soaps are also provided for your convenience. A wipe is also provided on the treatment bed itself for you to ensure you’re peachy fresh.

This is one of the most common texts I get, and the answer is Yes, absolutely! Just pop in a fresh tampon or you can wear a moon cup, and you’re good to go. I can work around it. Let’s face it ladies, if we didn’t carry on with life when Aunt Flo came to visit, we’d never get anything done! 😊

I also have a very useful Blog on this – give it a read. “Let’s Talk – Period”

Absolutely! We fully appreciate that growing a little human is challenge enough, without the fact that you may no longer be able to see your toes, or your lady garden! We want you to look and feel your best and are happy to help with that. There are of course exceptions for everything , so See Blog “Pregnancy Waxing” for more info.

It’s different for every client post-partum, depending on how the birth went and if there were any stitches, or C-Sections etc. I’ve written a post pregnancy blog guide, that lays it out in simple terms for you, this is for Intimate waxing – so if you want a body wax in the meantime, I’ll see you whenever you want to book one! No, unfortunately we are not able to accommodate children or babies in salon, so please enjoy the self-care time *see blog

Yes, again absolutely. Be sure and note it down to me on your initial consultation form, just so I am aware from the start. Being a full time waxer I tend to deal with a few embarrassing situations, embarrassing for you the client, not me the waxer. Rest assured, I’ve seen a lot in my career, and my experience with private parts and naked bodies, means not a lot phases me. It won’t stop me giving you an amazing wax, it will make you wonder why – you didn’t book in sooner!

See blog “Waxing with Piles” for more info

Ingrown hairs are hairs that have curled round and grown back down into the skin. They often appear like small spots or pimples and you can sometimes even see the hair trapped under the skin. They are extremely irritating aren’t they! Prevention is certainly better than cure, however if your prone (and many clients think they are, but in actual fact have just never been given the guidance on how to care for their skin, or what to use) we also have a couple of ingrown products you can purchase in salon, but we will always address whether these are actually needed, or if its just a case of upping your at home knowledge first.

See blog “Aftercare – and why you should be doing it” for more info

I recommend at least 48hrs before a holiday and you should keep out of direct sunlight for 48hrs before & after to give the skin time to settle. Plan longer, if you plan to get a fake tan before you go, wax then tan (tan should not be applied until 48hrs after).

Plan ahead! My diary is busy, and holiday season is not just June-August anymore! There is one of me and lots of you potentially, so being organised will help you get the slot you want! Gents – if getting a back, or chest wax for the first time I recommend a trial wax 4 weeks before your holiday wax to see how you get on, as these areas could be prone to a histamine reaction.

See blogs “Your Holiday wax Guide” & as a Brucie bonus for you a 2nd Blog “Why wax in Wintertime – to Prep for Summer of course!” for more info.

No, quite the opposite. Wax removes hair from the root, follicle and all, so over time, the hair will grow back finer, softer and appear lighter in colour.

Absolutely not. Many of my clients the number one priority for them, above other reasons, is they say it makes them feel fresher & cleaner, and that’s why they have it done time and again. If you visit a reputable salon, that practice a high standard of hygiene, and you follow the aftercare, you’ll be wondering why it took you so long!
