Your Holiday Wax Guide

So you’ve booked your Holiday! Yeay!!! It’s the best part of the year!
You don’t want to waste your precious relax time shaving every day of your hols, so you’ve decided to treat yourself to a wax! Smooth, hair free and care free that’s what holidays are for! Sun and Sangria awaits, so here’s what you need to know!

How long before my holiday should I be waxed?

I recommend coming into see me about 48hrs before you’re due to jet off! (but, remember holiday season is busy season, so plan ahead as I can be booked up 6 weeks or so in advance!)

Here’s why; Waxing removes hair from the root, taking the follicle and all, so this leave the pores open temporarily, and can give you the impression you look like a plucked chicken. A temporary redness (or erythema) can occur, and your skin will be freshly exfoliated from the wax. So it needs time for the pores to close and you need to keep it cool and calm in the following day or so, no exposing it to irritants like sand or UV rays, or even tight clothing.

How long does my hair need to be?
I get asked this a lot! It’s the most popular question. You need to be brave and put the razor away for 4 whole weeks before your appointment!
For nearly all body parts (3 weeks for underarms, and 2-3 for lip or chin). The wax has to have something to grab hold of! And it’s the length of hair that’s important, not the amount you have (everyone thinks they are the hairiest, trust me!)

Can I get a spray tan?
Yes, but again planning is key, you need to wait 48hrs after your wax for your tan, as you do not want tanning solution in open pores, it can cause spots and irritation or even allergy symptoms if not careful. Do not come in for a wax with a freshly applied tan, as the wax will just remove it and leave you patchy and then you’ve wasted your tan appt.

Can I use sunbeds or sunbathe after a wax?
I wouldn’t recommend sunbeds personally –I’m not a fan, but each to their own. But you must not use them for at least 3 days after a wax, skin cells will be too fresh, and you can burn more easily (especially as the lamp is in such close proximity to your skin).
As for sunbathing – well you’re going on holiday, so that’s to be expected, but I do recommend a high factor sun screen for your first few days after a wax, and ideally throughout. The higher the factor the greater protection from the sun’s UV rays (high factor does not mean your ability to tan will be impeded, it just means you will have a greater protection, from burning and skin damage).

How do I care for my skin on holiday?

Cover up with a light beach kimono, or t-shirt when the sun is at its strongest during the day, apply sunscreen regularly throughout the day. Especially if in and out of water.

Aloe Vera is a fantastic after sun product, that cools, soothes and moisturises at the same time. We stock it in gel & lotion form here in the salon.

If you want to keep your skin tip top- exfoliation helps keeps any in-growns at bay during your holiday, but only a couple times a week is sufficient, whilst on holiday.

If you do burn, do not exfoliate whilst the skin is red or if it’s painful in any way. Just keep up the moisturising, when the redness has passed, exfoliate lightly with a mitt or a gentle body scrub, to aid flaky peeling skin cells recover nicely – I recommend Ruff stuff sugar scrub here in salon, and we can demo how to use it at your appointment if required.
