Wax Hygiene – Yours & Mine!

My Hygiene

Here at WW we follow strict hygiene protocols and have ever since day 1!

You can be rest assured that when you’re in our wax room, everything I do prioritises the health and safety and wellbeing of clients, so here’s a little run down of what you can expect as standard when you come for a wax with me.

  • I always use top quality branded waxes & aftercare products, allowing for a smoother more comfortable waxing experience.
  • I NEVER “Double Dip” EVER!!!! – (see below for detail)
  • My wax room is kept clean & tidy at all times.
  • The Bed is covered with a disposable bed sheet on top of a wax pad that’s antibacterial & anti- microbial, the treatment bed is wiped down with anti-bac after every treatment and a fresh disposable sheet is used for every client. If required, I will change the sheet during the treatment.
  • I always wear Gloves! In addition I change gloves during the treatment, say if moving from your intimate area to your face or body to face. This is to avoid cross contamination, and is just nicer for you.
  • Tools are sanitised and sterilised after every use. I do this by first soaking in Barbicide, then I take these out and wash them in the sink with antibacterial hand soap, then as a final clean these are popped in a glass bead steriliser. I have enough tweezers and tools, to use one per client, so that until these are cleaned they do not get used again.
  • My wax pots are cleaned throughout the day regularly. On a regular schedule they are emptied completely and cleaned and refilled.
  • I wash and sanitise my hands before & after every treatment.
  • *Additional for Covid 19* – I regularly spray the room with Anti bac Dettol, aerosol to clean the room. The window is opened at regular intervals to air out the space and allow particles to escape, and circulate clean air.

So what is Double Dipping ??

It’s when a spatula full of wax is taken out of the pot applied to your skin, then they stick the same spatula back in the wax pot to pick up more wax! and repeat.  It’s just GROSS!  But unfortunately it does happen, and not all salons prioritise hygiene, and double dipping does still happen more than you think.

Here’s why it’s bad… What they’re doing is potentially transferring skin particles, hair, blood spotting, etc, BACK into the wax pot on that used spatula. Not to mention sweat, moisture, and potentially contaminating the wax with perfumes or pre wax products. By the end of the day it’s like a pot full of a stew of every single client they’ve waxed that day – would you want a lip wax from the same stewpot that’s been used to wax someone else’s bum??? No, me either!

So here at WW we have a NO double dip policy. A single side of a spatula gets used then it gets wrapped up before the other side gets used then we throw it in the bin! Once it’s been on your skin, it gets thrown in the bin. Yes, I use a lot of spatulas! Yes, I feel guilty about the environmental impact! However, this is my job, and there is no real way around this mitigating the risk, so instead, I donate to the Woodland Trust every year to offset and plant more trees. I support the Campaigns on the site once a quarter, and I play the People’s post code lottery, which actually again contributes to projects like the Woodland Trust.

I used to change the bins between every client but then realised that I was contributing more to landfill, by using more plastic bags than necessary, so now I only empty the bin when it’s full, usually twice daily, instead of 10-12 times a day. It’s not much but it’s my contribution to a more sustainable way of working.

Your Hygiene…

I know people probably come along to their appointment thinking “oh my God, I hope I don’t smell” the fact that you are thinking this in the first place, shows your caring and considerate, and probably don’t!

As long as you follow my advice on the Waxing Information page and shower on the day of the appointment, I don’t expect you to race home from work, shower for the second time that day and then race out to your appointment either.  If you’ve showered that morning then that’s good for me! There are freshen up wipes available if you need them.

Covid 19 –

We’ve all had to deal with this monumental pain in the arse virus for the last two years now, and so unfortunately it means I do have to write something about this on this blog.
Covid 19 – is highly transmissible, so we can’t treat it like any other illness at least not whilst the government, still has the potential to shut me down, or put us all into lockdown again! But neither can we afford to carry on as we were for the last two years.  Hundreds of small businesses have already closed, (including my favourite local tea room), and many more will follow unfortunately.
Therefore a new Covid 19 policy has been put onto my Booking Policy page. So please be aware of it before you book. If you or any member of your household are covid positive, you must NOT come into salon. See policy for details. Likewise if I test positive, I will keep all of you safe and reschedule you all.

So that’s what to look for!

Does your salon take your Hygiene seriously?? Does it offer aftercare as standard? (also see aftercare blog  ) If not, it might be time to switch salons!!

Peace, Love, Wax!
